The learners licence is one of the cheapest documents you will ever queue for — but there are three separate amounts to know about.
The three fees
| Fee | When you pay it | Typical range |
|---|---|---|
| Test booking fee | When you book your test date | Roughly R60–R110 |
| Issue fee | When you pass and the licence is issued | Roughly R40–R70 |
| ID photos | Before the test | R20–R60 at photo shops |
Fees are set per province and change from time to time, so treat these as ballpark figures and confirm the exact amount with your DLTC when you book. Most centres take cash only — bring cash.
What you do not pay for
Studying. Every practice question, study note and revision sheet on this site is free — start here. Be careful of anyone selling “guaranteed passes”; a licence obtained fraudulently can be cancelled and lands you in serious legal trouble.
Failed? What a retest costs
If you fail, you pay the booking fee again for a new attempt. That is the real cost of walking in unprepared — a morning of leave, the queue, and another booking fee. One honest week with the study guides is cheaper.
