The national learner licence theory exam is not one blended score. It is split into three sections, and you must reach the required pass mark in each section. Doing very well in road signs cannot make up for failing road rules.
The three sections (electronic learner exam)
In line with how this app structures official practice, the sections break down roughly as follows:
- Road Rules — up to 30 questions; required pass 74%.
- Road Signs — up to 30 questions; required pass 77%.
- Vehicle Controls — up to 8 questions; required pass 75%.
Treat these percentages as targets when you review mock-test scores by category—not as a substitute for your booking letter or testing centre instructions, which remain authoritative.
Why per-section passes matter
Exam logic treats each section independently. That mirrors real driving: you cannot safely compensate weak knowledge of junction rules by memorising extra signs. When you practise on the learners hub, use Review Questions or Exam Readiness by category so weak areas show up before test day.
How to prepare
Use Official K53 Exam or Custom exam for timed practice, then review mistakes by topic. Pair question practice with the Road Rules and Traffic Signs material in the book collection for depth, and revisit vehicle controls until the answers feel automatic—not guessed.
