You cannot write the K53 learners test without a booking. Here is exactly how to get a test date, either online through NaTIS or in person at a Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC).

Before you book

Booking online with NaTIS

  1. Go to the official NaTIS website (natis.gov.za) and select Book now.
  2. Register a profile with your ID number and cellphone number — the one-time PIN goes to that number.
  3. Choose Learners Licence Test, your province, and the testing centre you prefer.
  4. Pick an available date and time slot. Slots in big metros go fast — check early mornings and month-ends.
  5. Save or print the booking confirmation. You still pay the test fee at the DLTC.

Note: online booking is not live in every province. If yours is not supported, book at the DLTC counter instead — take your documents and expect a queue.

How long is the wait?

Anything from a few days to several weeks depending on the centre. If your date is far off, use the time well: work through the study guides and drill the practice questions until the mock exam feels easy.

Changing or missing your booking

Most centres let you move a booking once if you give notice. Miss it without notice and you usually forfeit the booking fee — so set the reminder.
