When you book your learners test you must choose a code. Pick the one that matches what you actually want to drive.
The three learners licence codes
| Code | Covers | Minimum age |
|---|---|---|
| Code 1 | Motorcycles (with engine-size restrictions by age) | 16 |
| Code 2 | Light motor vehicles up to 3 500 kg — normal cars and bakkies | 17 |
| Code 3 | Heavy motor vehicles above 3 500 kg | 18 |
Most people write Code 2 — it is the one for ordinary cars.
Does the test differ between codes?
The theory is largely the same — road signs and rules of the road apply to everyone — but the vehicle-controls section matches your code: motorcycle controls for Code 1, car controls for Code 2, heavy-vehicle controls for Code 3.
Which code should you practise for?
Our practice tests cover the full question bank used for light vehicles, plus the signs and rules everyone must know. If you are writing Code 2, you are in exactly the right place.
