Overtaking questions test whether you understand when passing is legal and safe, not only whether you can accelerate past slower traffic. Lane markings, sight distance, and courtesy to other road users all matter. Combine this article with the cheat sheet (road rules) and deeper chapters in the Road Rules book.
In general: overtake only where permitted by signs and markings, when you can see far enough to complete the manoeuvre without forcing others to brake or swerve, and after checking mirrors and blind spots. Where barrier lines or regulatory signs prohibit crossing for passing, remain in your lane until the restriction ends.
Core ideas the exam favours
- Visibility: Blind crests, bends, and intersections are high-risk—wait for a clear view.
- Markings: Road surface lines reinforce regulatory signs; treat them as part of the legal layout.
- Completion: You must be able to rejoin your lane safely—avoid cutting in.
