Knowing the process kills most of the nerves. Here is the test day, minute by minute.
1. Check-in and paperwork
Arrive early — 30 minutes minimum. You will present your ID, photos and booking confirmation, pay any outstanding fee, and give fingerprints.
2. The eye test
A quick screening of visual acuity and field of vision, done at the centre. Wear your glasses or contacts if you use them — the licence simply gets a restriction noted on it. If you fail the screening you can get an optometrist certificate instead.
3. The written test
You get the K53 question paper or a computer terminal, depending on the centre: 64 questions — 8 vehicle controls, 28 road signs, 28 rules of the road. There is a time limit, but it is generous; almost nobody runs out of time. Read each question twice, watch for words like NOT and closest to the kerb, and remember you must pass each section separately.
4. Results — the same day
Your paper is marked on the spot. Pass, and you pay the issue fee and walk out with your learners licence. Fail, and you can book again — there is no forced waiting period in most provinces, just the booking queue.
The night before
Do not cram new material. Run the quick revision sheets once, sit one mock exam, and sleep. Consistent practice in the week before beats panic on the night.
